What Is EMDR?

Healing how your brain stores difficult memories

EMDR — Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing — is based on the understanding that distressing memories can become “stuck” in the nervous system. When this happens, reminders of past experiences continue to trigger strong emotional and physical reactions long after the event has passed.

Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR works directly with how traumatic memories are stored in the brain. Using guided bilateral stimulation — eye movements or gentle tapping — EMDR helps the brain reprocess these memories so they are stored more adaptively.

The goal is not to erase memories, but to help you feel less triggered by them — more grounded in the present, and better able to move forward with clarity and emotional stability.

Not Just Talk Therapy

EMDR engages the brain’s natural healing mechanisms directly, rather than relying solely on verbal processing of traumatic experiences.

You Stay in Control

You don’t need to share every detail of a traumatic experience. The process is guided, structured, and always moves at your pace.

Lasting Results

Many clients experience significant reduction in emotional triggers and intrusive memories — often when other approaches haven’t fully helped.

Rigorously Researched

Decades of clinical research support EMDR’s effectiveness for PTSD, trauma, anxiety, and related conditions.

The Process

The 8 phases of EMDR therapy

EMDR follows a structured 8-phase protocol that ensures safety, stability, and lasting change. Each phase builds on the last, moving you from history-gathering through active processing and finally to re-evaluation and integration.

1–2

History & Preparation

We gather your full history and build stabilization skills before any processing begins. You’ll feel grounded and ready.

3–4

Assessment & Desensitization

We identify specific memories to target and use bilateral stimulation to reduce their emotional charge.

5–6

Installation & Body Scan

Positive beliefs are strengthened and any remaining physical tension or distress in the body is addressed.

7–8

Closure & Re-evaluation

Each session ends with stabilization. We revisit progress in subsequent sessions and continue as needed.

Conditions Treated

What EMDR can help with

Trauma & PTSD

Single-incident and complex trauma, post-traumatic stress, and the intrusive symptoms that disrupt daily life.

Anxiety & Panic

Generalized anxiety, panic attacks, chronic stress, and the fear responses that feel disproportionate to the situation.

Grief & Loss

Complicated grief, sudden loss, and the emotional weight of experiences that are difficult to process through talk alone.

Negative Self-Beliefs

Deep-seated beliefs about yourself — “I’m not safe,” “I’m not enough” — that are rooted in past experiences.

Depression

When depression is linked to unresolved trauma or painful life experiences, EMDR can address the root rather than just the symptoms.

When Talk Therapy Hasn’t Helped

Many clients seek EMDR specifically because traditional talk therapy alone hasn’t fully reduced emotional triggers or intrusive memories.

Getting Started

What to expect in your first session

Beginning EMDR therapy is a careful, supportive process. Nothing happens before you’re ready. Your first session focuses entirely on understanding your history, current concerns, and goals — with no processing of difficult memories until you feel stable and prepared.

Sessions are conducted via secure, HIPAA-compliant telehealth platforms, so you can engage from the comfort and privacy of your own home anywhere in New Jersey or Pennsylvania.

Most clients begin to notice meaningful shifts within a handful of sessions, though the pace is always tailored to your individual needs and readiness.

02

History & Goal Setting

Your first full session gathers your history and establishes clear, collaborative goals for your EMDR work.

03

Stabilization & Preparation

Before any memory processing, you’ll build coping tools and stabilization skills so you always feel grounded and safe.

04

Active Processing

When ready, we begin the reprocessing phases — always at your pace, always with your wellbeing as the priority.

05

Integration & Growth

As processing continues, you’ll notice shifts in how you relate to difficult memories — less triggered, more grounded, more free.

“EMDR gave me back the ability to talk about what happened without falling apart. It didn’t erase the memory — it just took away its power over me.”
